Between 1775 and 1783, some 10,000 Americans of African and Indigenous descent fought in the American Revolution. Just over 6,600 have been documented from pension and bounty land permits, and from other primary source documents.

As Americans have pursued their genealogical roots, new patriots are found in federal, state, and local archives, online databases, family records, and from lineage, historical and genealogical societies.

Evidence suggests that Americans of African and Indigenous descent are pursuing their colonial ancestry and their role in the Continental Army, state militias and in providing aid and comfort to the war cause.

As part of the Society of the First Africans Families of English America (SOFAFEA)’s Forgotten Patriots Project it intends to share the heroic contributions of these men, women and children who gave their lives for the cause of American independence.

SOFAFEA intends to ensure that these stories are no longer lost to history and to the American people, and to restore what history has taken from them …their voices.

If you have a story, please share with us so that we can add it to our Honor Roll.
