 Theaters of War During the Revolutionary War the Continental Congress managed the war effort into five distinct geographic theaters, each with its own unique characteristics and its own commanding officer. American men, women and children of African and Indigenous descent participated with distinction in each of the five theaters and served in all of the major battles during the war. 1. | Northern Theater: | Canada, the New England States, and the Hudson River area north of New York City | 2. | Middle Theater: | Pennsylvania, New York City, New Jersey, Delaware, and Maryland | 3. | Southern Theater: | Virginia, the Carolinas, Georgia, and Florida | 4. | Western Theater: | Military activities occurring west of the Appalachian mountains | 5. | Naval Theater: | Continental and State navies as well as privateers and the French and Spanish fleets. |
